Community Compassion

Community care is central to the Good Shepherd Mission. To achieve our mission, we rely on the compassion of coworkers, donors, and volunteers from all walks of life.

Since 2023, we have collaborated with the Notre Dame Bridge Program, hosting four Notre Dame University students each summer for an eight‑week immersive experience.

Notre Dame Bridge Program

NDBridge invites first year students (freshmen) to engage in a first-hand experience working in community to learn about issues of social justice and reflect on their responsibility to the common good.

Summer service at Good Shepherd

Good Shepherd supports individuals facing homelessness, food insecurity, and mental illness through programs such as our DARE (Drug and Alcohol Enrichment) Program, medical clinic, community meal program, and multiple housing initiatives – sheltering 107 homeless men each night.

During their time with Good Shepherd, NDBridge students assist across programs— shadowing DARE coworkers as they support clients on their healing journey, serving meals, sorting clothing, and greeting guests when they enter the Centre.

After four years of hosting NDBridge students, we’ve seen how meaningful these experiences are. The 2026 cohort shared reflections from their summer:

“On our first day, a deaf woman fainted in the dining room. Suzy and I sat with her until EMS arrived, and Nurse Paul later taught us basic ASL. A week later, I was able to use those signs to speak with her again.” – Claiborne

“Spending the summer at Good Shepherd was incredibly eye‑opening. I made many friends among the staff and regular clients.” – Michael

“Learning about the struggles our clients face was heavy, but working here gave me hope. Everyone is committed to offering love and dignity.” – Reagan

“Being part of the Good Shepherd community is something I’m truly grateful for. The staff and volunteers were so welcoming, and the lessons I learned will stay with me forever.” – Suzy

As the 2026 session ends, we extend our gratitude to all NDBridge students who have spent their summers helping us serve the most vulnerable members of our community. Together, we continue to make a positive impact.
