Things are HEATING up in the six, and while many people can’t wait to partake in Summer fun, for the homeless, and at-risk members of our community, the hot summer season can be anything but a welcome treat.
The summer heat poses significant dangers for homeless individuals, particularly due to the lack of access to shelter and air conditioning.
Here are some of the risks and considerations:
Heat-related illnesses: Without relief from the heat, homeless people can suffer from severe sunburn, heat exhaustion, sun poisoning, heat stroke, and even skin cancer.
Pre-existing conditions: Those with heart, lung, or mental health conditions are especially vulnerable to the effects of extreme heat.
Social isolation: Homeless individuals may be more socially isolated, which can prevent them from receiving help or information about cooling centers and other resources.
Environmental factors: Rising temperatures in urban centres can negatively impact air quality, increasing the risk of respiratory problems and other health issues.
Here are some ways you can make a difference:
- Provide Water: Dehydration is a major threat. Hand out bottles of water, especially on very hot days.
- Donate Sun Protection: Sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses can protect against sunburn and heatstroke.
- Offer Heat Relief Items: Handheld fans, moist towelettes, and umbrellas can help manage the heat.
- Share Information: Share information about nearby cooling centers or shelters where people can escape the heat.
- Support with Basic Necessities: Nutrition bars, wet wipes, and reusable water containers are also helpful.
- Volunteer or Donate: Consider volunteering at local shelters or donating to organizations that support the homeless.
- Be an Advocate: Spread awareness with friends and family about the challenges faced by the homeless during summer and encourage others to help.
Remember, even small gestures can have a big impact on someone’s well-being during the hot summer months. The COOL thing to do this summer is to be a supporter of community members in need.
