As we approach the annual day dedicated to fathers – Father’s Day, thoughts move to the fatherly figures in our lives who fill the role and the characteristics they hold.
One important characteristic worthy of consideration is responsibility. Fatherhood doesn’t just require responsibility; it creates it. This sense of responsibility gives fatherhood structure and meaning – someone depends on me.
Responsibility doesn’t just rest on the shoulders of fathers however; it rests on the shoulders of anyone that takes an active role in caring for others.
It is this ownership of responsibility in caring for those in need that informs the actions and activities of the valued members of the Good Shepherd family – coworkers, volunteers, donors and advocates. Put plainly, our responsibility is to those within our community that have nowhere else to turn, to show them that not only do they matter, but that they are valued. We do this by providing meals, shelter, listening to their stories, and providing help, on their terms. We have carried this responsibility close to our hearts since we first opened our doors in 1963. This is not a burden, but a blessing, one which informs our actions as we welcome the homeless and vulnerable community members into our centre every day.
Responsibility isn’t just something Good Shepherd Ministries does — it’s who we are. Every meal served, every bed prepared, every life supported reflects a promise to show up with dignity, compassion, and unwavering care to those who need it most.
