Passing the baton

Passing the baton

Passing the baton

I first arrived in Toronto and took the role of Executive Director at Good Shepherd Ministries in February 1995. It seems just like yesterday. Much has happened in 27 years. There have been struggles and triumphs. Through my tenure and with an incredible group of talented and dedicated co-workers, Board of Directors, donors, and volunteers, we managed to expand our services to care for the homeless and marginalized. We expanded programs to deal with some of the underlying causes of homelessness – mental health, addiction, health care, housing and more. None of these services would have happened without banding forces with all levels of government, community, and individuals. It is now time for me to pass the baton to another. The strength of our community and the dedication to our mission makes this a much easier task. You may be asking but why now? The Brothers held their chapter in June. Election for a new council was held and I was elected Provincial Superior of Hospitaller Order of St. John of God, Province of North America. This position brings many responsibilities and quite a bit of travel. As of July 25th, Aklilu Wendaferew, currently Assistant Executive Director, will be the new Executive Director. Aklilu has 30 plus years of experience in the field of social work and most of that experience focuses on the issues facing homeless individuals. We have built a solid foundation and Aklilu has a strong team working with him. They will continue to work diligently to ensure that the best service and care are offered to assist those who need our support. While I know I will miss the day-to-day interaction with all our wonderful volunteers and donors, I will begin a new chapter for the community. I will remain in Toronto and, of course, will still be active in the ministry as I take a seat on the Board of Directors. It has been a privilege to have served as Executive Director for so many years and know that together we have helped countless people receive the help they needed. I thank you again for your care, compassion, and generosity.
