Werner (Vern) Zapfe

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Werner (Vern) Frank Zapfe, Chairman Emeritus of Good Shepherd Ministries, on December 20, 2024.

Vern’s journey with Good Shepherd Ministries began in 1995, followed by his appointment as Board Chair in 1996. Recognizing the urgent financial challenges the organization faced, Vern wasted no time. With his characteristic drive and vision, he organized the very first Good Shepherd Golf Tournament in just three weeks, raising an astounding $36,000 (net) – a remarkable sum for a small, grassroots charity.

This act of leadership set the tone for Vern’s transformative role at Good Shepherd. Over the next 25 years, Vern’s energy, dedication, and generosity reshaped the organization. Under his stewardship, Good Shepherd expanded its services to meet the growing needs of those struggling with poverty and homelessness. Vern’s tireless efforts were the foundation of many successful fundraising initiatives, including the annual golf tournament, a lottery, and a glamorous Gala. He was not only a champion of the cause, but also an ambassador who brought his family, friends, and colleagues along on this important journey.

Beyond his work with Good Shepherd, Vern was a successful entrepreneur, the founder of Four Seasons Drywall Systems and Acoustic Limited among other business ventures. Born in Germany, Vern emigrated to Canada as a boy, starting his career installing drywall with his older brother. Through his hard work, perseverance, and unwavering integrity, Vern built thriving businesses that reflected his character.

Vern’s legacy is one of compassion, commitment, and community. His unwavering belief in helping others, combined with his extraordinary leadership, has left an indelible mark on Good Shepherd Ministries and the many lives it touches. While he may no longer be with us, his spirit and vision will continue to inspire all of us who had the privilege to know him.
