Andy Finds Home

Homelessness has reached crisis levels. According to the City of Toronto’s Street Needs Assessment 2024, more than 15,000 people have no place to call home—three times as many as before the pandemic.

Older adults and people with serious medical needs are among those most at risk, as waitlists for supportive housing and long-term care stretch into the tens of thousands.

In the middle of this crisis, you are making peace possible for people like Andy.

Andy came to Canada from South Africa in 2005 with a master’s degree in social work. He dedicated his career to helping others—even working in the remote Northwest Territories.

But after a devastating stroke, Andy was left with physical and mental disabilities. He could no longer work, lost his income, and eventually lost his housing.

“It was a very dark period in my life,” Andy said.

Andy found a home at St. Joseph’s Residence. Here, he receives the support he needs: a safe place to live, meals, and compassionate co-workers who help with daily tasks.

“This is a really nice place to live,” Andy says. “I’ve been here two years. It’s a real lifeline that gave me peace.”

At St. Joseph’s, the least medically complicated resident lives with three severe health conditions. Your generosity ensures that care continues 24 hours a day, day after day.

Soon, St. Joe’s will welcome its next resident—a 73-year-old Veteran referred by Good Shepherd’s Homeless Veterans Program.

Your continued support will provide him with dignity, safety, and care in his later years. With supportive housing out of reach for many high-need seniors, your generosity fills a critical gap and keeps frail seniors from becoming homeless.

Thank you for standing with the most vulnerable. In a city where too many are left behind, your support means people like Andy—and our Veterans—are not forgotten.
